Optimizing disaster recovery with cloud infrastructure

Softengi recently completed a project for a major environmental, health, and safety (EHS) software provider, transitioning their disaster recovery (DR) strategy to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to better serve Fortune 500 clients. The project aimed to replace a traditional, less efficient on-premise DR site with a modern cloud-based solution.
Transitioning to a cloud-based DR strategy
Previously, the client relied on a standby server located in another country, which required up to six hours for activation. Seeking a more resilient and cost-effective solution, the team evaluated cloud providers and selected AWS for its superior resource management, scalability, and transparent pricing models. The migration focused on several key objectives:
- Replicating Hyper-V virtual machines into the cloud without changing the existing virtualization environment.
- Ensuring secure data transfer via FortiGate firewalls and VPN tunnels.
- Reducing recovery time to under four hours.
- Optimizing costs by utilizing on-demand instances and efficient storage classes like S3 Glacier.
Cost-efficient failover management
A core feature of the implementation is the cost-effective approach to resource usage. By using small-capacity machines for continuous replication and deploying high-performance bare metal instances only during actual failover events, the system minimizes operational expenses. The process involves creating an AMI image from the replica server, attaching volumes to a bare metal instance, and configuring virtual machines for immediate use.
The transition to AWS allows for a flexible, scalable, and secure disaster recovery environment that eliminates the need for redundant, idle hardware while ensuring rapid recovery.
This case study highlights how strategic cloud migration can significantly enhance system resilience while maintaining strict compliance and security standards for global enterprises. By paying only for the resources used during migration and testing, the client achieved a more robust infrastructure that aligns with modern industry standards for business continuity.
