Over the last few decades, the Ukrainian IT industry has gained recognition through outsourcing services. Many companies create software solutions for international clients, ensuring high quality and competitive pricing. However, this approach has significant limitations. It does not foster long-term economic growth, as the primary profits and innovations remain outside the country.
For Ukraine to become a strong technological player, it must focus on its own products. This is the only path to building a resilient economy and global competitiveness.
Why outsourcing is a dead end for Ukraine?
Over the last 20 years, the Ukrainian IT industry has developed as a service business. Outsourcing companies operate on a model of fulfilling orders for foreign clients, and this model is already exhausting its potential.
Ukraine has all the prerequisites for creating its own technological products:
- Highly qualified specialists
- Strong technical education
- Successful startups that have already proven their competitiveness
But for now, most resources are working on developing someone else's ideas rather than creating our own solutions.
The product model – the key to an economic breakthrough
Product companies have a much higher level of value-added than outsourcing. If Ukrainian specialists are capable of creating complex technological solutions for clients in the US or the EU, why not do it for ourselves?
- Outsourcing company earns money only for the time spent.
- Product company earns continuously by selling its solution to hundreds or even millions of users.
If we look at the most successful countries in IT, they have developed their own products. Estonia gave the world Skype, Bolt, and Pipedrive. Poland has CD Projekt and Allegro. Israel is one of the centers of the high-tech startup movement.
What does Ukraine need to transition to a product model?
- Mental transformation. Businesses need to understand that developing their own products is a long-term game, but with much greater prospects.
- Development of venture capital. Without investment, creating a competitive product is difficult. It is necessary to attract funds not only from abroad but also to develop local funds.
- Government support. It is necessary to create conditions where technology companies are not forced to register their business abroad but can work effectively in Ukraine.
Conclusions
Outsourcing cannot be the only model for the Ukrainian IT industry. If we want to become a technological nation, we need to change our approach and invest in our own products.
It is time to work for ourselves, not for someone else! 🚀
